How this speed test works

Peachy Internet Speed Test runs entirely in your browser. It sends and receives traffic through Cloudflare's global edge network — the same backend that powers Cloudflare's own speed tester — to give you a real measurement of throughput from your device to the public internet.

What gets measured

  • Ping (latency): the round-trip time of a tiny request, in milliseconds. Lower is better.
  • Jitter: how much your ping varies. Low jitter is critical for smooth video calls and gaming.
  • Download: sustained bytes-per-second pulling data into your device using multiple parallel streams.
  • Upload: sustained bytes-per-second pushing data out of your device.

Tips for the most accurate result

  • Pause downloads, cloud syncs, and streaming on other devices on the same network.
  • Test on Ethernet if possible. Wi-Fi can lose 30–70% of your line speed depending on distance and interference.
  • Turn off any VPN before testing to measure raw line speed; run the test again with the VPN on to see its overhead.
  • Run the test 2–3 times at different times of day. Evenings (7–11pm local) are when residential networks are most congested.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good internet speed?

For a single user, 25 Mbps download is enough for 4K Netflix or YouTube. For a household with multiple users streaming, gaming, and on video calls at the same time, 100–300 Mbps is comfortable. Gigabit (1000 Mbps) is overkill for most homes but useful for large downloads and many simultaneous devices.

What is the difference between Mbps and MB/s?

Mbps is megabits per second and is the unit ISPs use to advertise speed. MB/s is megabytes per second and is what your browser shows when you download a file. 1 MB/s equals 8 Mbps, so a 100 Mbps connection downloads at around 12.5 MB/s.

What is ping and what is a good ping?

Ping (or latency) is the time in milliseconds for a small packet to travel to a server and back. Under 20 ms is excellent for gaming, under 50 ms is good for video calls, and under 100 ms feels responsive for browsing. Over 150 ms can cause noticeable lag.

What is jitter?

Jitter is the variation between ping measurements. Low jitter (under 10 ms) means a stable connection. High jitter causes choppy video calls, voice cut-outs, and stuttering in online games even when ping looks fine on average.

Why is my speed test slower than my plan?

Common causes are Wi-Fi distance from the router, congestion from other devices, an outdated router, an Ethernet cable not rated for your speed, an old device with a slow Wi-Fi chip, VPNs, or the speed test server being far away. Test on Wi-Fi and again on Ethernet to see if Wi-Fi is the bottleneck.

How accurate is a browser speed test?

Browser-based speed tests are accurate up to roughly 1 Gbps for most users. Above that, browser overhead and a single TCP stream can underestimate true line speed. This tool uses multiple parallel streams to help saturate gigabit links for a realistic result.

Does the speed test use a lot of data?

A full test typically transfers between 50 MB and 500 MB depending on your connection speed. If you are on a metered plan or mobile hotspot, be aware that this will count against your data cap.

Is this speed test free?

Yes. Peachy Internet Speed Test is 100% free, requires no signup, runs entirely in your browser, and does not install anything. There are no ads or trackers other than standard site analytics.

Would you use a Peachy network monitor app?

Continuous speed & uptime monitoring on your phone or PC. Vote yes if this would be useful.
